I hear an accident happen – do I qualify as a witness?

I had a glorious dinner tonight with my brother and mother sans the Hubs and Tee, hurray! The salmon sashimi was really fresh and the chef was in a good mood so my platter had huge chunks of salmon which I devoured in total ecstacy.

As I ran to my car with my contented tummy trying not to get wet from the night rain, I heard a motorbike horning frantically, then BANG. It was dark and I couldn’t see anything but that was sure a LOUD BANG. I jumped into my car, shut the door and noticed across the road, the silhuoette of a man walking along the pavement suddenly cross the busy Jalan Ampang road frantically. Then as I swerve my car out onto the main road, I see it.

Motorbike on road. Old man on road under motorbike. Taxi in front of motorbike. Man from across the road helping lift motorbike off old man. Taxi zooms off. Man from across the road lifts old man to put him on pavement to allow cars to drive through. Old man’s face looks like he’s in severe pain. His jeans are ripped and there are stains on his shirt. I assumed it was blood but I couldn’t be sure in the dark.

I had an instinct to find a suitable place to stop and help but it was raining and Tee was crying at home looking for her Mummy so my Motherly instinct unfortunately took over. But I was filled with emotion. Did those 2 have a mobile to call for more help? Was the old man going to be OK? Did they manage to get the registration number of the taxi? I called my younger brother immediately, who was still at the restaurant hoping that he wouldn’t be like how I perceive most Malaysians to be with their ‘I don’t want to know attitude’. I told him what had happened very quickly and thank goodness he didn’t disappoint. He definitely earned two thousand more brownie points from me tonight.

He’d walked out in the rain to check on the old man and it turns out that he wasn’t going to die. Help was already on the way so that made me feel a whole lot better. If my brother hadn’t been there tonight, I think the guilt would’ve have eaten at me for a very long time.

But then I remembered the time there was this major accident on New Year’s Eve one year when I actually stayed to help a victim. There was a collission between 3 cars – 1 car was totally smashed and had a lady victim still inside who couldn’t get out. It took a whole 45 minutes before the ambulance arrived and it is my guess that she didn’t make it. There were a few victims along the pavement and I was with one who had his legs totally broken. You know they’re broken when the legs are in contortionist positions that are impossible to do normally. I was talking to him continuously to take his mind off the pain. I called his family and allowed him the use of my phone so he could talk to his family. There was an accumulative audience of probably 200 that night but not even a fraction came up to help. I remember shouting for a Doctor and in that whole crowd, only one Doctor showed up, who coincidentally happened to be an acquaintance of mine.

I live by what goes around comes around.

Although I didn’t stop to help the old man out today, I pray that he is alright and will recover soon without incurring too many dollar signs on the hospital bill. I am so, so grateful for the man across the street who came running over to help the old man get onto the pavement. Sadly, I don’t think many people would’ve done it, especially in the rain.

Whoever you are, you angel…..I saw you. I saw you when you were walking along, probably going home after a hard days work. I saw you when you heard the crash and stopped moving. I saw you when you dodged oncoming cars to get your butt across as fast as possible. I saw you not even pausing to think for a moment if you should just continue your walk to let ‘someone else’ deal with it. I saw you struggle to lift that bike in the rain by yourself as you were small in size. I saw you sweat when you managed to help the old man to the pavement.

Whoever you are…..although small in size, you are a man of tall nature. I wish you well and pray that you have a fantastic life ahead of you. You deserve it.
