Deepavali at Tee’s school

For every celebration, especially the local ones, Tee’s school goes out in a big way to teach the children theoretically and experientally, the meaning and significance of each festival. For Deepavali, the whole school was decked in Saris and Punjabi Suits and parents are welcomed to join in the fun. The school had coloured rice artwork and lamps/candles everywhere and all things Indian from floor to ceiling. It even SMELLED Indian, with sweet Jasmine trails.

The Hari Raya photos are not up yet because I didn’t bring my camera that day and only have handphone photos so I’ll check them out later to see if they’re worth posting *smile*

Tee with an onlooking teacher, selecting some Deepavali goodies (specially designed packets by the school filled with Muruku, La Doo, and some other Indian cookies, not sure what they’re called) for herself. On the walls are artwork by the children.

Colourful Indian bangles that were presented to the girls, including a jewelled putu/bindi, whatever you call it, that thing on your head!

Apart from Indian Deepavali cards (not shown), there were also real Indian costumes displayed and explained to the children. They now know what a Sari is and a Choli etc etc etc.

Some of the Indian goodies on the table. Oil lamp, candles, incense, jasmine flowers……the kids got to paint their hands with real Henna (of course, some got them all over their bodies, not just their hands!)

Then finally, doing an Indian dance on the floor. Real drama queen. It’s genetic.
