First glimpses of Chiang Mai…..

Allow me to bore or excite you (depending on what kind of person you are) with some aged old charm of a country that’s rich in variant cultures and some kick-ass creativity, not to mention very lovely people. I almost want to move to Chiang Mai now that I’ve had some PERFECT massages. At rock-bottom prices….how to resist?

I do apologise if you find your picture here and get offended and if you do, just let me know and I’ll take it down, reason being it is 2.31am Chiang Mai time and I forgot to edit the faces off and now that I’ve uploaded it, yadayadayada……

The night before Chiang Mai:

So. We woke up at 3am – honestly, what IS the point in sleeping? I went to bed at 1am and woke at 2.45am because T2 woke up then and needed the boob. It was also a struggle tearing T1 away from bed despite the excitement of travel but thank goodness, we made it to the airport on time in our trusty luxury van. RM230 one way because it was at 4am!!! Our flight was at 7am and guess what? At 5am, the airport was sardine packed AND typically Malaysian, there wasn’t any signage to inform passengers where to go for your flight so we ended up asking a dozen AIR ASIA people WHICH lane to go to so we could check-in for Chiang Mai and were given several different answers. After walking back and forth about 2 dozen times with our trolleys, we finally found our counter in the DOMESTIC check-in area. Please don’t ask. They don’t know either. It’s all a bit messy in there but it’s not necessarily Air Asia’s fault.

But hey, if you’re all game for adventure, and have always fantasised about being on the Amazing Race, then this is right up your alley.

We discovered very early on that the Hubs and I were separated on board and there was nothing we could do about it because they had a policy where BABIES HAD TO SIT UP FRONT FOR SAFETY REASONS. Whilst I appreciated their consideration for my baby’s safety, I really didn’t like being separated from my back up. Our entire family were scattered all over the plane and the nearest member to me was 5 rows away.

Bravely, I took on the challenge anyway and prayed T1 loved the boob enough to behave. 2 hours into the flight, I was dog tired and so brought T2 to the Hubs so I could have some shut eye and hoohoohoo…..little baby WAILEDDDDDDDDDDDDDD during landing because she was probably experiencing air pressure in her ears and the Hubs turned into a statue. He was in a FOUL mood after because I’d dumped the baby on him without any water, without anything really. I was only 30 rows away. But he claimed the seat-belt light was on and because of turbulence, he couldn’t exactly have brought her back. Oh well.

Whilst I was having me time on the uncomfortable flight (well, you get what you pay for, don’t you?), I saw lots of clouds which made me reminisce about the time I was at some Asiaworks leadership programme where I was asked to spell out my dream home. Whilst everyone else had their dream home on land (house by the stream, house by the mountains, modern penthouse on Trump Tower), I was the only person who had it on the clouds……..certainly knew how to get myself noticed, didn’t I? It also might have been that I had my head up in the clouds….

Very soon after, I caught sight of some lovely hills and I knew we had arrived.

Imagine being lost in the midst of all that greenery……compass or not, I’d have died from fear of snakes!

And as we approached the quaint yet rustic town within a town that was surrounded by a moat, (oh, Chiang Mai does have some delectable charm, it really does……) I began fantasising about all the delicacies that we keep coming back for year after year. My MIL bought us some rice, which is one of the main staples in Chiang Mai, because she couldn’t believe how ridiculously cheap it was!

Air Asia’s landing was superb. I’m very critical of pilots’ landings because my uncle was a flight engineer and I’ve heard lots of stories……oh, yeah……

It was ironic how the scene outside my window presented such calm yet 30 rows behind me, I could hear the very loud wails of my baby. My unmistakable baby T2……screaming with rage for her Mama.

But Chiang Mai airport awaited.

And it wasn’t long more before she was going to be dumped into my care again so I was lapping it all up. See, even the approach of the airport connector gate fascinated me.

Welcome to Chiang Mai!!!

  1. Uooh! Your post must be God-sent! coz i attempted to book a family hol to ChiangMai for next year via AA but haiya, as usual, after keying in all the guest details for the umpteeth time, got error msg and finally the ticket price went 4X higher, so i abandon plan. Sheeshh! will just settle with enjoying pictures and reading your post haha

  2. Well done Mamapumpkin – I would have done THE SAME and dumped, I mean passed the baby nicely to hubby sitting 30 rows back!! (actually I would have caused a bit of a raft with the crew to shift the whole plane around to get hubby where he should be – his kids!) Mind you we have done the hubby in business class and me and the kid in economy flight to sing once from perth..one kid though and that was EASY PEESY. Three and I’m already shitting in my pants thinking about it.
