Well, apart from spend our first week of holiday shuttling to the hospital, we spent our second holiday week recuperating from the hospital stay! No visits to the zoo, no holidays at the beach, no playgroups. We just stayed at home all week. We went to watch Toy Story 3 with her school friends but that’s about it.
I found that T1 was able to entertain herself and hardly bugged me at all during the holidays. Was it post-head bang syndrome? Maybe a part of her brain was knocked into realisation that we cannot simply attend every school holiday programme or every drama class that she wants. She read a lot of books. And invented many new ways of entertaining herself. And her sister. Even me!
Here is baby doll in bag again. This time she is under my dining table – THE dining table that my charming ex-British boss gave to me many years ago. We haven’t even had time to source for a new one, can you believe it? I know exactly what I want but finding it or looking into it is another story altogether. I have more urgent pressing matter right now.
Voila! The dining table overcast with a red sheet. For today, it is T1’s cave. She is a bear and lives there with baby bear. There are bats, lots of bats! And you need to know your way around the cave or you’d get seriously lost. The cave is filled with meandering paths spotted with statues and streams of every colour. There are even diamond columns. At night, the hungry lion stands by the cave opening but her CCTV camera warns her when he is near. (I haven’t asked her yet where it gets its electricity from, perhaps a generator……maybe I should ask her and teach her what a generator is tomorrow)
You see? Kids don’t need toys. Leave them without, and they are forced to exercise that brain of theirs. Previously, all T1 wanted to do was go out, meet friends and do fun things. HER version of fun things. And it always involved exhaustion. Exhaustion of the entire family. But this last holiday, she learned that she could have her own fun and it didn’t have to be outside of the home nor did it need toys, and I am glad we didn’t do anything for the holidays because otherwise, she would not have learned this very important kid lesson.
She entertained herself in her state of the art cave for an entire afternoon and all I did was shout out, MAKE SURE YOU DON’T GET YOUR BUM STUCK IN BETWEEN THE CHAIRS!!!
Simply Marvelous.
