Asthma attack at 3am

So what does one do after inhaling Ventolin for about 50 times and you still feel as though you are about to pass out? *taps fingers*

Well, that happened to me. 2 nights ago. I was having trouble breathing and wasn’t sure what to do. I kept sucking my inhalers over and over but they didn’t seem to work. If you saw me, you would have sworn I was a drug addict high on cocaine, desperate for a fix, and once I started feeling faint, I knew I had to do something.

Something.

And that something was to get to the hospital for some help. Except that it was 3am in the morning and my 2 girls including the Hubs were all fast asleep having vivid fantasies as they all have remarkable imaginations. Should I disrupt Winnie the Pooh getting on an airplane? Kill that person who drove like a maniac in the high speed police chase? Or fill those boobs with an overflowing potion of free boob access?

I really didn’t want to cart them all to the hospital. I didn’t even want to wake them up.

But do I drive myself to the hospital? Do I call an ambulance? How much time did I have before I had an acute attack and literally passed out and died? From my 30 year experience with asthma, perhaps another half hour.

I have been ill for 6 weeks now and finally, it’s caught up with me and gripped my chest with a threat. It’s trying to tell me something. Like get a maid. No, just kidding. I refuse to get a maid. Even if it kills me. My mother keeps telling everyone how I will NOT cope without a maid. Supportive woman she is, my mother. So different from all my friends who support me and cheer me on that I CAN do it and I WILL do it. And not only that. I WILL do it with a SMILE!!! Yes, I will. *cough-cough*

I said a prayer and just then, T2 woke up. As though she knew that I was going out, so I gave her the boob for about 10 minutes. After that, I knew I could no longer stay so I woke the Hubs up and told him my problem. His face showed utter panic but I took control and made him stay to entertain T2 as she didn’t look like she was going back to sleep.

Before he could even think, I grabbed the car keys and rushed out the door and drove quite skillfully, like Schumacher to the hospital, which was only 5 minutes away without traffic.

The good thing about Accident and Emergency when you have asthma is that you are attended to immediately although it was a quiet night that night, and there were no other patients.

I was given the gas mask with some meds immediately and sent home with a steroid inhaler called Seretide, more Ventolin cannisters, Iliadin for my blocked nose and Singulair. The bill was RM320.

By 4am, I was home but the next morning, I couldn’t get out of bed! I had contracted a fever! Thank God, it was Friday but still I didn’t know how I was going to survive single-handedly with 2 girls when my whole body ached like crazy and my head was pounding like you were throwing the chilli pounder at me over and over again. No kidding.

The Hubs was called, came home at 3pm and took over like a professional nanny. Bless him. I slept from 12pm – 7pm and felt better after. Close call. Never again, I hope.
