My little girl is now in big school. Thrown into the deep end of hundreds of students. No more play. It’s serious studying now. *sigh*
But guess what? She WANTS to do this. She was bored of preschool work (apart from the playing bit, of course). She will always love playing, that girl. Since she came out of the womb, she was already a playaholic. Non-stop play. Her dream would be to play all her life, but of course, that isn’t realistic. So what do we do? Send her to big school where there is hardly any play. Haha….
Well, we didn’t have many options but thankfully for now, we feel we’ve made the right decision. It isn’t a perfect school but which school is? For all the hype about it being all academic and high standard, I am yet to observe that. But perhaps I have even higher standards. The first week was an easy week but on week two, she came home with homework. 10 words to learn for spelling, 10 words to learn for ejaan, 2 pages of a workbook for English, a few pages of a workbook for Bahasa and a page of a workbook for Math. She completed her homework in less than 20 minutes without any supervision. She didn’t have to learn her spelling or ejaan because they were so easy, she claimed she knew it all.
Whilst I don’t want to push her to do more difficult work, I can’t help feeling that she’s just wasting her time when she could be doing more. Like learning about the big wide world that she is so interested in. Like solving problems. Like practising her creativity in more ways than one. Like discovering life and its daily quirks. But yet, she is stuck in big school, not being challenged at all right now. Academically anyway.
Where else is there to go though? International school is way too expensive and even if we make ourselves afford it, we still decided that we were not sending her there for primary. Just today, we were informed that in International School, there is the influence of pornography from the elders when your kids are really young. Do we want Tee to be exposed to that? No way.
So for now, we’ll just play along and take each day as it comes at big school and hopefully things will get tougher. I am so afraid of her being bored that I almost want to enrich her learning at home, though I have no idea where to start nor do I even have the time! Let’s hear it from you home-schoolers!
