HELP!!!!
I have been breastfeeding T2 exclusively since the day she was born. She refuses the bottle so she has been by my side pretty much ALL THE TIME. Except for the once or twice that I snuck out for a quick breather, which left her in tears till I got back mind you. So there. I’m in baby prison again.
Breastfeeding is new to me. I didn’t do it with Tee exclusively but I find it completely over-rated. It has its pros, for sure. But it also has its cons. Being someone who has done both, I will say they both have its pros and cons and I am torn between the two. Now, I don’t even have an option because T2 won’t take the bottle!
At her last check up, she weighed only 6kg and my dearest little girl has hardly put on any weight in the last 6 weeks! She has put on perhaps 300g in 6 weeks! I am usually not one who stresses out about weight although she does look tiny compared to her counterparts but it was when the Doctor said he wasn’t happy with her weight gain that I started stressing out. He suggested I started solids at 5 months old so I did. But the girl has spat out every drop of ‘solid’ I’ve pushed into her mouth. To be fair, we’ve only tried it 4 times and the books say it takes at least 7 tries before anything starts getting in. The thing is, pushing the spoon into her mouth actually distresses her and she starts crying and has this STOP STUFFING THAT DAMN SPOON INTO MY MOUTH look?
What should I do? Give the solids a break? What if she’s not getting enough nutrition from my breast milk? I don’t exactly have the best diet…….I’ve pumped and discovered that I can produce 20-30ml at each let down. When she has a proper full feed, she takes in probably 100-120ml that I know off (4 let downs). I wonder if she isn’t getting enough hind milk because many a time, I get bored and just pull the nipple out and she doesn’t complain because she’s had enough to stay full. So I’ve since allowed her to feed as long as she wishes provided time permits.
Breastfeeding experts? She is now on the 10th percentile on the baby girl growth chart, hardly gaining any weight at all. Yet, she has tripled her birth weight. 2.2kg to 6kg. I’m all confused. Advise anyone?
Desperate.

my firstborn was on 90% bm and she was 6.5kg at 6 months old. she was 2.3kgs when she was born. she’s still on the lower percentile now at 4 yrs old but her docs have never worried on her small size. they said as long as she’s healthy and her appetite is good.
so don’t u worry too much about her weight. she could be on the small frame side too like you. guess she isn’t ready for solids yet but u can keep on trying. she will eventually like it like most babies do. 😉
looks like a well fed baby to me. my baby was 7.6kg at 5mo n his birth wt is 3.15kg. so yours is pretty ok what. dù`n worry so much lar; as long as baby is healthy ok d. 🙂
Not to worry so much….her birth weight was 2.2kg, hence every baby grows at different rates. As long as she is feeding, happy, alert and active….don’t stress yourself too much.
I didn’t start solid food till after 6 months. Exclusive (breast)feeding for the 1st 6 months, well, after the 3rd month, I became a ‘milkmaid’ and pumped out my milk and trained her with a bottle, and freezed the extras. Hence she still had some breast milk by the time my milk supply dwindled at 7 months.
my 2nd was also exclusively b/fed. i believe it had more pros than cons cause there is just so many difference in the area of health and intelligence compared to my 1st one who i only b/fed for 2 months..:)
my 2nd one is very similar to your case, not putting on the weight that fast and stucked to me like glue and hated solid. it was a b/feeding nightmare, especially when they dun take the bottle and i dunno if he is eating enough or not. but the nurse says as long as he is pooping and peeing, there is nothing to worry about the weight gain. some kids just take a slower time to gain. and from the pic, T2 looks just fine..abit grumpy though..:)
Hey don’t fret. B3 also barely put on any weight. He is 6.5kg now as well. I think your paed over-reacted by being too “by-the-textbook” that infants up to 6mths old should put on minimum 600g every month. I think it’s only a rule of thumb because it doesn’t take into consideration the huge weight gain that they recorded in the earlier months. As long as T2 is happy and seemed healthy and happy, I wouldn’t bother being fussed. As for solids, they need to be ready and it’s usually at Month 6. SO I guess in her case, she isn’t or she may like it but her tongue-thrust reaction is still very strong.
Oh no!! She look so gorgeous, beautiful!! She doesn’t look she is 6kg, she look heavier than that. So geram la, want to cubit cubit.
oh i’m so glad someone else is feeling the same way. although i am able to pump and give a bottle to her. i have never given my baby formula even with my work schedule. takes a lot of work to be able to exclusively breastfeed for so long. i get what you mean though, if it’s so good, why isn’t she gaining weight? my daughter is going on 7 months and has been stuck at 6kg since 3 months old. 🙁
how’s your baby doing now?
You made me sad. You baby is 6kg at 5.5 months. Mine is only 6.7kg and he is 9 months. He is born 2.45kg full term. Fully breastfed for six months. He is also a fussy eater. I lost hope on fattening up my baby and my husband is sad that I gave up on him.
