Taking life risks

Last week, I asked the Hubs if my car had any petrol, seeing it is his duty to fill my car up with gas. He nodded a reassuring yes which made me assume I had a full tank. I needed a full tank as I had a busy week.

Come the day when I brought T2 out for a breastfeeding support group, the car petrol gauge clearly showed 2 bars. 2 bars meaning I won’t be going far. 2 bars meaning I would have to fill my car up after another 50km or so. There was no way I was going to fill my car with gas with T2 in it inhaling all those petrol fumes so I prayed that I’d make it through the day. Besides, with T2 in the car, I’m zooming from A to B and from B to A, without unnecessary stops in between. If you’d ever driven a newborn, you would know why.

Come noon, so far so good. After I picked Tee up from school, I got stuck in traffic and that is when I decided to call the Hubs to let him know of his little bloop, just because, you know, just because I would forget if I didn’t do it right there and then. So I called and sounded him out about the petrol in my car. Or lack of.

This was his reply, “The complaints department is open daily from 6pm – 10pm. Thank you and good bye.”

I continued my complaints nevertheless about how he was getting old and forgetful (nevermind my own forgetfulness and age) and how I couldn’ depend on him blablablablablablabla…………..

When I finally hung up, Tee said gingerly after a long silence, “Mom? You know that in life there are good risks and bad risks.”

I was totally blown away. What did my 5 year old know about taking life risks?

“Oh yeah?”

“Yes, it is very good to take risks sometimes but sometimes risks can also be bad.”

“Ohhh…..” not quite sure where this was going.

Then, “Do you know that driving with only 2 bars of petrol is a bad risk?”

I just had to laugh at that and then reassured her that we had plenty of gas left to arrive home with but the poor girl was so nervous about being stranded on the road with T2 that she persisted.

“Do you know that you should just stop at the yellow and red sign up front? Do you know why?”

She meant the Shell Station and I have no idea why she couldn’t just say the gas station or the petrol station or quite simply, the Shell station. Why did she have to go all cryptic on me and say the yellow and red sign up front? Was she trying to be subtle? *roll eyeballs*

“I really think you should stop the car and put some gas, Mom….”

“Oh, don’t worry! 2 bars will take us all the way to Nana’s house and back. We have PLENTY of gas. Don’t you worry.”

“You know, it really isn’t worth taking a bad risk.”

“Yes, I know but this isn’t a bad risk at all. Trust me, I’ve been driving for many, many years and we definitely have enough petrol to get home, OK?”

“I think we should put some gas….because we are in a traffic jam…..”

I am suddenly wondering if the Hubs has taught Tee too much about cars, life and what not. When did she become the expert on fuel consumption and life risks?

“Oh, don’t worry. I promise you, we will be fine.” I prayed all this while that the cars would keep moving and that T2 would continue sleeping……

“You know, Mom? If you don’t bring T2 out, it is a good risk. She won’t cry and my ears won’t fall out, but you know, taking a bad risk is not a good idea….trust me….”

I can’t believe my daughter speaks like that. Somebody, kill me please! I hate to admit it but she sounds exactly like me, she’s even learning MY LINES!!! Ears falling out??? How dramatic is that????!!!!! And TRUST ME???

Too funny.
