5 Loving Things to do with our Little Ones

I got this this title from The New Parent. An ever inspiring Dad who’s never short of ideas in raising excellent kids, then selfless enough to share his wisdom. I salute you, Frank.

Picking up where you left off,

Here are some of mine:

  1. Play 50 things with our senses – Tee sits on my cushy lap and we talk till our mouths dry up about 50 things we can see, 50 things we can feel, 50 things we can hear, 50 things we can smell, 50 things we can touch, 50 things we can taste…..I choose 50 to broaden her vocabulary although many a time, we get stuck! But its’ enjoyable Mummy and Me time.
  2. I always encourage her to help – anyone, anywhere, anything. We help Nana take her medicine (by arranging her pills and preparing her water), we help Daddy wash his car, we help her friends by playing together, we help the bears sleep by being quiet, we help her (God forbid!) battery operated toys last longer by turning them off when she is finished playing, we help her body stay clean by having a bath…….etc. She is turning out to be a very helpful little girl. 🙂
  3. We make up silly songs together. She is very good at this, conjuring up her own playful lyrics to familiar tunes. We laugh till we’re all teared out because she has such an imagination. Like “The Battery is Eating Carrots, the battery’s eating carrots, Hi-ho a Merry-Ho, the battery is eating carrots. Then he got a stomach ache, He got a stomach ache, Hi-ho a Merry-Ho, then he got a stomach ache. He had to have a poop, he had to have a poop, Hi-ho a Merry-ho, he had to have a poop. The poop couldn’t come out, the poop couldn’t come out etc……..to the tune of The Farmer in The Dell. *as I hide my face in shame* She does come up with less disgusting lyrics, I assure you. I guess the message that she has instinctively learnt is that when Mummy is pissed off, she can sing Mummy a funny song. What better way to break family tension than with humour.
  4. We role play – again, she loves using her imagination as we pretend and dress up as Passenger and Ship Captain going on a sail to England. The world is our oyster. We are always going places so she has learnt quite a bit about cultural differences. Like in China, people eat rice with chopsticks and speak Mandarin; and in England, the Queen does her royal wave to the people (haha!) and that Aunty Ayah lives there with Maisy :-); and in Malaysia, the Government doesn’t fix the lamp post so there is always a black out (oops! That didn’t come from me!). We use Millie Miller’s ‘Our World’ as a guide. And no, they don’t use the above as examples. She loves identifying the country flags though, one of her favourite past-times.
  5. We play family and friendship games – I introduce simple friendship concepts like sending cards and invitations for different occassions, receiving mail, keepsakes and mementoes, regular phone calls to her grandparents in Kota Bharu, arranging photographs in albums, discussing the family tree, writing a journal (although she can’t write, of course, but she understands about writing her day). These are the activities I love most as it is close to the heart.

  1. Very interesting activities you have there. Sherilyn loves to conjure up her own silly lyrics too. She picks lyrics from a few songs and then sings them in one tune, like “Jesus loves me this i know, little jenny wants to play”, sounds really really silly.
I shall try the ‘play 50 things with senses’ but i dont think i hv the time for 50 things, maybe 10. Good activity to while away time in the car when travelling.

    Glad you like them. Enjoy!
