Toddler on Hunger strike

For the last 2 weeks, my daughter has decided to join the anorexic gang. 🙁

She used to be a really good eater, sometimes even eating more than her own father, but of late, she eats less than a fistful, HER fistful, of food.

I’m at my wit’s end and am considering reverse psychology, and put her on a starvation diet.

I go out of my way to cook for her everyday and I’m not a bad cook. I even rush home after picking her up from school each day to whip up a pre-prepared nutritious meal, just for her consumption. She stores it in her mouth. She says she is really full. She says the food is too chewy. But if she spots a chocolate brownie, suddenly, she is hungry. I don’t even make her finish her meals if she proclaims she is full, but how can you be full after eating 2 spoonfuls?

Is this about training? Is it a toddler phase? Is it psychological?

Because my maniacal mother keeps discussing her weight in Tee’s presence so Tee is well aware what the meaning of FAT is. She also teases me about being FAT. Tee absorbs this and in turn calls me FAT. Then makes comments like she wants me to take the stairs because I am too fat. This is coming from my own little girl, who is not even three. I have warned my beloved mother countless times that the PAEDITRICIAN says under no circumstance should we discuss weight issues in the presence of children. It falls on deaf ears. Sometimes, my daughter asks me if a particular food has sugar because she doesn’t want to eat it, if it does. But at other times, she happily digs in. It depends on her mood, which at the rate we’re going, she should be getting her period very soon.

So what should I do????

If I had to put my heart into another healthy toddler meal only to be rejected again, I’d probably not want to cook again. Ever.

I only work towards her best interest and want her to have a healthy start in life. Mentally and physically.

Yet, I have tried everything from here to the moon and back, and am now smashing against concrete walls.

  1. Maybe u cld explain to her the diff of healthy nutritious food & junk food & what they do to our bodies.

I have! It is subtly drilled in and she has many days where she proudly proclaims she loves fruit and vegetables…..and egg. So it’s not that she doesn’t know what’s good and what’s not so good. Just toddler PMS, for sure.

  2. Does she help you prepare the food? Simple things like tearing leaves etc? I can totally understand this. You spend the time cooking, prepping and it is normally their favs, they then say Im not hungry mum.

J1 is also like that a lot of times. If they know there’s a special treat for after, they will eat two mouthfuls, say they r full and then eye the treat. But I’ve refused their treat LOL u dont eat properly MATES, you dont get treats. (I know its rare for them to have those treats) but eeee, geramnya, when they act fussy.

Yes, she halps me prepare the food which makes me madder cuz’ it means more work for me! I do that too sometimes, by offering an incentive, and then hold firm. And she also takes 2 mouthfuls and says she is full. Then it’s a battle of the stubborness factor. Who can whine more and who can ignore more. Funny thing is, my family sometimes makes remarks about me being full, then how come I still have room for dessert? My answer – dessert is stored in a different compartment in the stomach mah! *guilty*

    Hahaha, what a clever answer!!

One’s gotta do what one’s gotta do to survive, babe!

  4. I wish I had some help for you, but I’m currently in the same position with my almost 3 year old girl. I will be following your comments with interest. But for now a HUGE hug from one frustrated mother of a toddler annorexic to another!
