The challenges of breastfeeding

On demand, that is.

Boy, where do I start? Apart from having breasts that are hyper sensitive to touch all the time (not even the silky touch of chiffon material brushed against my nipples is spared!), and leaking breasts, AND painful breasts……the tiredness, gosh, the tiredness.

Sometimes, T2 feeds for 10 minutes and can sleep up to 4 hours. Sometimes she feeds for 30 minutes and wakes the next hour. What’s the rationale, eh? There doesn’t seem to be any logic in it and I cannot plan my life accordingly *sigh*

Some nights, I only have to wake up twice between midnight and 6am, some nights I wake 5 times!!! WTF!

And guess what? Tee and the Hubs sleep right through this whole process. Last night, I made some noise about how they needed to be more supportive since I seem to be the only one doing all the hard work. They both showed a bit more effort today.

The Hubs sat by me today when I asked T2 to hurry up and finish her breakfast and said, “it’s OK, if T2 wants to suck, let her suck as much as she wants.” I gave him a glare and said, “Well, easy for you to say, why don’t you stand with your left leg up and see how long you can stand it?”

Later, he asked T2 whilst I was feeding again, “Isn’t the view boring, T2? You’re always staring at breasts when you eat each time…..are you bored of the view? Why don’t you ask Mommy to get a breast tattoo? Y’know, maybe some ABC’s so you can multi-task and learn your ABC’s at the same time whilst you’re drinking your milk?”

At least my pediatrician is supportive and asked the Hubs to stay awake with me in the wee hours of the morning to tickle T2 to keep awake whilst having her feed whenever I’m up breastfeeding. He said it was called SHARED PARENTING. Do you think that’s happening?

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Oh girl, I understand all that about bf!

For my first Angel, I sort of demand feed all the way, till she was 2. When I had my second, I was determined not to fall into the same trap. I used Gary Ezzo’s method and it worked out so wonderfully!

My husband sleeps through 5 years of my night parenting and I don’t think it will change. So when you mention shared parenting. Hahaha, I think I’d probably want to, errrr… assign him something else to do like, washing the diapers? 🙂

    Congrats on your newborn!

  2. your hubby is so funny lar about the “view”. i think he is the one who is bored. 😆

my hubby NEVER stay up with me. we even slept in separate rooms. he sleeps all by himself in our rooms and me n the rest of the children in another room. he said he needs the sleep coz he got to work the next day and i can nap when baby naps!

  3. It’s nice to wear interesting necklace to let the baby look at.

You don’t lay down and feed? I remember my time, when the girls needed to feed, I just lift my top up, laid the baby next to me, let her feed while I continue sleeping. That’s why I like breastfeeding, there’s no need to wake up, turn on the lights, and make milk.

  4. 😉 The one way men can really support, is if you pump the milk..and let them feed the milk!

Other than that… he can change nappies.

I followed Gina Ford’s schedules for all three boys. Worked like a charm for me. They are fantastic sleepers. I swear.

  5. LOL, tattoo! I never slept (not to mention hving sex) for almost 3 yrs as Abilash was fully bf & used to wake up 6 x tru out his breastfeeding yrs (can u imagine a 3 yro waking that many times to nurse!)

  6. I’m like zmm, i co-sleep with the babe and konk out while she suckles. my hub’s share of parenting was (notice the “was”) putting Belle to bed, reading her books while i nursed Cass. Now that Cass is older, guess who is doing most of the stuff?

  7. lay down and feed, it’ll be easier and you also can have some rest at the same time.
your hubby has good sense of humor 🙂
