That’s what Tee does and it used to drive me ballistic because I absolutely hate braggers but since then, I’ve learnt from the experts that children below 5 (and thereabouts depending on individual maturity) actually do not realise that they are showing off and in fact, it is healthy that they have some form of confidence to display that they can actually perform a task well. They are merely telling someone else, “Look at me! I can do this! Can you?” very innocently without intention of hurting the other person’s feelings.

However, as parents, we should slowly introduce the concept of trying to NOT hurt other people’s feelings, so whilst it is very good that she can achieve a certain task well, and it is fine to show and tell people that she can perform that task, she has to be careful in not undermining anybody. This will come with time when our children grow up so not to worry.

There are 2 reasons why young children show off. One is healthy, in that they do it unknowingly, and are just merely stating things as they see it, black and white. The other is because they are insecure. Some parents undermine their children at home making them feel inadequate so these kids need to brag in order to get some form of approval from outside the home. So parents? Be careful what you say to your kids!
