Tee is at this stage where she needs to do sums equivalent to 10 + A = 15, so what is A? Wow! I sure don’t remember doing that at Primary One! But that’s where the International School syllabus is at. It was quite difficult teaching this concept to her and to be honest, I have no idea what the approach is. How do you teach a 4.75 year old how to conceptualise the above? Any ideas?

What I’ve realised is that Tee is a visual learner, meaning she needs to see pictures or objects in order to learn better. Explaining things to her don’t work. So I brought out a few baskets and a whole load of balls. And we tried some exercises. If you had 10 apples in the fridge but you had 15 guests coming to your party, how many apples would you need to ask Daddy to buy from the supermarket? THIS, she gets……but when faced with the above straight line sum, she needs to think a bit more, and when the numbers get more complicated, she needs help.

I tried googling and learnt that at this age, we should play number games with the kids. On a daily basis, give them a mathematical problem like the one above to solve in a fun story form. Once their brain is trained to think logically, we can introduce the secret number, which is ‘A’ above. Apparently, once their brain is used to solving these logical problems, the series above can be solved almost automatically. I find it hard to believe but hey, I’ll try it and report back any progress within the week!
