The Hubs’ dragon temper

My dearest husband, fondly admired for his fierce dedication to family life, has a very explosive temper. Nobody who didn’t know him any better would expect this and in fact, many of my friends don’t believe it, but it’s true! Ever since I met him (more than 10 years ago), he already had this temper. His dad has it too so it must be genetic. It must be a high blood pressure thing although ‘touchwood’ he does not have this condition yet.

For the most trivial of things in the past, the Hubs would go absolutely berserk at traffic conditions, mad drivers on the road, stupid people at banks, slow employees…..coming from New York, it was understandable. I see how his best friend, Tee’s Godfather, get seriously irritated in KL too whenever he visits. For example, in a New York restaurant of 10 tables, you may have 2 waiters and they are all on the ball. Here in KL, you could have 6-8 waiters and still nobody knows what is going on. New Yorkers get really irritated with that kind of shit.

I digress. The point of this post was to tell you the story of one Saturday when I was peacefully working at home alone, when the Hubs burst into the study and asked me sternly if I’d withdrawn 7k from the bank. Huh? I gave him a blank look. Why would I withdraw any money from the bank? I don’t even have TIME to go to the bank and besides, he gives me cash every month. So the answer was no. Then I remembered, I did take out a thousand for my Mom so I told him and reminded him that I’d already informed him of that previously, so no issues there. He insists that when he went to the bank that morning, my account was 7k short. I panicked too!

So the 2 of us quickly tried accessing my account and Tee’s account through the internet and of course, we couldn’t find the security chips when we needed it most urgently. More stress! When we finally found it, it turned out that the bank had shut down Tee’s accounts internet access as she was a minor. What the f*%# is up with that?! To cut a long story short, we deduced that I had mixed up my ATM card and Tee’s ATM card and so the balances in both our accounts got mixed up causing the Hubs to freak a little.

The next thing we did was rush to pick Tee up from Mandarin class and head off to pick up our new helper by a certain time when the Hubs suddenly realised he didn’t have his phone on him. He thought he’d left it in the car but it wasn’t. He was SO STRESSED and I was completely calm. I asked him gently to retrace his steps all morning when he was out. He couldn’t even think as he was so stressed so I thought aloud for him. “OK, you went to the bank, you went to fill gas in the car, is there anywhere else you went? Could you have left it at the bank since you were so stressed about losing money”

All kinds of expletives flew out of his mouth when he realised he’d left his phone on the bank counter and so we rushed like the mad drivers we so hate, to the bank but alas, it was nowhere to be found. The funny thing is, when I tried calling the phone, it was still ringing! Normally, when people steal a phone, they ted to turn it off. All this while, Tee was completely quiet. She’s a smart one – knows when to shut up when things are heated in the front row.

Then he decided that maybe he had left it at the gas station? So we went there too but nothing. By then, I already had to call the agency to inform them that we were running a little late. I suggested to the Hubs that perhaps his phone was at home after all but because he was so stressed, he just had no idea where he’d left it. Perhaps it was on silent mode so calling it wouldn’t find it. And because he was SO STRESSED about losing his phone, he couldn’t go straight to the agency to pick up our new helper until he found his phone!!! So off home we went so he could hunt down the blasted phone. I’d offered to search for it saying that since I was calm, had a better chance of finding it but he resisted saying that in my heavily pregnant state, we wouldn’t be leaving the house till the next day. OK, whatever.

In the car alone with me waiting, Tee finally uttered her first voice since we picked her up from class. “Mom? I want to follow you wherever you go, OK? Don’t leave me with Daddy. I don’t want to go anywhere with Daddy….” I burst out laughing. That daughter of mine is a real politician.

So finally the Hubs returned to the car, WITH PHONE – Hurray!!! I didn’t even say anything because I’m sure he was being punished enough by the realisation that he had spoilt everyone else’s day by just being stressed unnecessarily. We took another mad drive to the agency to welcome our new helper, as though nothing in the last 3 hours had ever happened………

  1. Ooh..ooh.. i read an article before which says ..when men lose something, most of them get irked more if we offer to help, or even say anything remotely related to the lost item. So we should just be a breathing vase until they find whatever they lost. And life resumes as usual.. 😀

  2. Tee is hilarious! She must have been observing her stressed-up daddy with his big temper =)
