Improving a Preschooler’s Reading skills

We pay almost RM1000 per semester for Tee to go for reading classes when she can already read. This is just to satisfy her desire for wanting to spend extra time with her friends at school. We haven’t decided if this is money well spent or not because honestly, we haven’t a clue what she does in reading class. Because the school uses the Oxford Reading Tree series to help children read, and because Tee can already read the entire series of ORT (up to Level 10, I believe), what more is there?

Some people say, oh well, just let her go…..as long as she is happy. I’m not sure about that as it is really my guilt that when she is home alone with me, she is bored out of her wits and lonely, that we fork this money out. *sigh*

Her reading teacher told her to bring in a book that she had difficulty reading so she brought this book, Hansel & Gretel (a very expensive book!), but to be honest, she can still read the entire book.

To Tee, it is only difficult because there are a LOT of words by her standard, hence long and tiring to read. But if you sat by her and made her read it, she will and can. And not only that, there are not many words within the book that she does not know.

So should we continue with this reading class? We could save a few hundred every month.

One of the words she learnt in this book was ‘famine’. I explained to her that famine is when there is a dry season and the sun is so very hot that all the rivers dry up and all the plants die. When plants die, animals have no food, so they die too. When there are no animals and plants, people have no food. And that’s what we call a famine.

But when you ask Tee to explain what famine is, her answer comes out slightly different and more dramatic and of course, it includes lots of hand actions and eye expressions. I always told you she was a drama queen.

“Famine is when there is a very, very, very, very, very…….hot summer when the sun is REALLY HOT (whilst she flaps her arms up and down continuously) and there is no autumn (crosses hands), no winter, no spring (crosses hands and shakes head), only a very super hot summer and the sun burns everything up, with big flames! So the plants die and the animals die and after that we all die! Because we have no food and the animals have no food and there is no water for all of us. Even the fish are dead! So everything dies!!!”
