My brother, the Durian.

Tough as rock on the outside and deliciously soft and squishy on the inside. The durian is also a favourite fruit of mine, incidentally. Including Indian mangoes.

My brother is 10 years younger – he was an ‘accident’. Oops. But seeing that me and my other brother were all big and boring, my parents decided to tire themselves out all over again. I am glad they did because he is the most wonderful brother you could ever dream of having. Despite his laziness.

Snowflake (his baby nickname because he was SOOOOOO fair and lovely) was born a Leo and I loved him to bits. He was a dream baby, toddler, kid. He wasn’t loud and boisterous like the boys. He wasn’t argumentative like the girls. He was neat, kind and loving with days spent reading children’s encyclopaedias. I fed him some beer when he was 6 and he became quite visibly drunk, pure entertainment for us – bad sister.

He passed out one day and I resuscitated him. I still remember how the maid panicked and carried him out into the neighbourhood yelling for help. She was the only adult home and it was the scariest moment of my younger life.

He was also entrepreneurial. At the age of 4, he used to draw with coloured markers (artistic creative talent has dawned on both my brothers) and stick ‘decorative studs’ on his shoes and my Mother’s friends would always ooh and aah about how wonderful his shoes were. Snowflake (not a very macho name, init?) would voluntarilly ask them if they’d like their shoes decorated as well. Only 4 Ringgit. No one took him up on the offer. Probably because his price was out of range. I’m sure that’s why he’s in finance now.

Unfortunately, my parents divorced when he was 10 and I can only imagine that the smelliest and heaviest of concrete shit crashed upon his world. I wasn’t even around to be there for him, enjoying the London air. He got passed around like a football when everybody was too busy dealing with their own emotional shit. He had to stay with Dad, then with an Aunt, then back to Dad, then with Mom. When he finally returned to Mom, he seemed a wreck. Stripped off his confidence and not looking anyone in the eye, he wouldn’t even speak. It took 2 years for my Mother to scrape him out of his shell before he started joining our world again.

Many years, girlfriends and dramas later, Snowflake developed into a Durian. See how people can change?

He doesn’t give anyone the time of day. He is surface arrogant and knows his strengths and weaknesses to a T. He has many street friends. He is bloody intelligent. He plays strategy computer games and wins. He is the strong, silent type. He doesn’t say much but when there is something to say, it is so powerful it blows you over. He doesn’t change his voice when he talks to his one and only niece, Lil Tee. C’mon…….everybody changes their voice when they talk to Lil Tee. He is also well protected and tough, and has very thick skin. He makes all his girlfriends do the work. No, they just want to do the work. For some God forsaken reason.

And then, he is fiercely loyal. He would take really good care of special people. He had this cousin who was less fortunate, that he would care for everywhere they went. And then he had a friend he would protect like he was the father of the kid. If I was really in trouble, I know I could count on him. He loves like there is no tomorrow and is ragingly passionate. He will never admit this, of course. He has this intensity within him…..and I guess that must be why all the girls are putty in his hands.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture of him as he’s not big on pictures. So this will have to do.

Of course, the real reason I write of my brother is because he is exactly like me.

Hi Durian, if you’re reading *wave*
