Frivolous spendings…..

When I was in my twenties, I had my first taste of luxury. I loved the smell of crisp new notes from the bank. And I loved spending…..what is life after all if you cannot enjoy it? Thus it has always been Easy Come, Easy Go…….for me.

Until I met my husband.

Suddenly, priorities changed. I changed. There were more important things to look forward to, like property, a car, childrens’ education, investments, retirement, holidays, the future etc etc etc.

If I hadn’t spent so frivolously in my younger days, I could have bought my own property at the age of 25 but because I had, I was broke by the time I was 30. C’est la vie. I told myself that there was a lesson to be learnt in this. I asked myself if all the stuff in my cupboard really brought happiness. The answer is yes, but only temporarily. The reasons one would splurge on something unnecessary are varied. Perhaps you’ve never owned an Hermes bag before so you want to. But you will realise that once you do and once everyone has seen it, it goes right back into the cupboard and it no longer serves it’s purpose. Is it some kind of respect that you are craving? It all boils down to self esteem, doesn’t it?

Have you noticed how if a lady is going to join a group of rich ladies, she would put on her diamond rings, carry her expensive handbags and don her expensive clothes? Yet when she hangs out with her lesser rich friends, she dresses more low key? Unfortunately, the charm of a women comes from within. Some ladies could put on a million bucks and still repel and some effortlessly, like my Mother, could wear a fake watch and everyone would believe it was real.

My mother is someone who would never splurge on bags, clothes and shoes. She’d much rather splurge on diamonds or jewelery as she feels that it has a better resale value. And she cannot understand what I see in items of luxury. I told her that it is because I am a designer that I value good design and good quality. After all, I’m not the crazy chic who wants a Gucci bag for the sake of owning a Gucci bag. I am not brand loyal. I only buy something if it is truly remarkable, in that there must be something about the item that I really, really like. This means I value good design and quality, and even a bag from the flea market at a dollar could have this effect on me.

Whenever I flip through the glossies, I cringe at women who appear regularly fully made up to the nines parading their latest assets. I am not jealous, far from it. In fact, I ‘know’ many of them and I thank God everyday, that I am not like them. Because their lives are so empty. Everything about it is superficial. Even the people around them are superficial. Trust me, they are very lonely despite their displays of a packed social calendar. Out of 50 socialites in KL, you will find ONE who is normal and grounded. And it is usually the one who is very, very, very rich.

Why in the world would one spend 5 million on handbags and shoes when you could really make better use of that kind of money?

So I have this constant battle within me. If I feel so strongly about frivolous spending, why do I still do it?

And finally, the answer came to me……

It’s because I have a vagina.
