The Psychology of Giving

From the end of December last year, I posted up calls for help for the Children of Myanmar. I posted this call for help on this blog and on my personal Facebook page. On the rare occasion that I go out (probably once since) I also ask my friends if they would like to help. There was a plan to get my entire office involved to help but because I have been so busy, that plan has not happened yet. That’s OK. We have time because helping the Children of Myanmar isn’t going to take overnight.

We also have the 2 Nations 1 Heart event happening on Sunday 7th April and if the kids can raise some money then, perhaps I can realise my goal of RM50,000 to Myanmar. Small gift but making a difference.

Earlier this year (12 January 2013 to be exact), the walls at the Nanoo Monastery where 180 children live, collapsed. This wall was part of a 3 building plot and housed the children’s classes and sleep. Because the wall had collapsed, it posed a structural threat to the kids who slept above it and the cold of winter seeped in. I cried. I’ve met these kids. These are the same kids who selflessly gave to my daughter.

.

Thanks to my very GENEROUS FRIENDS, we received a huge amount of funds to help these walls get built back. By early March, work was underway. We could not build the new walls immediately, but at least now we know they will hopefully be safe from cold next winter.

.

By the time we arrive in Yangon this weekend, these walls should have completed and I will show you more pics.

But see what a difference all of you are making?

I wanted to share with you all the money that I have received from this blog that I will bring with me to Yangon for the Children of Myanmar. I will not put names for confidentiality but look at the figures and you will know where you are in there somewhere.

Ladies –

1  x RM 2,000

5 x RM 1,000

1 x RM 900

1 x RM 500

4 x RM 300

1 x RM 250

2 x RM 200

7 x RM100

5 x RM 50

1 x RM10

Men –

1 x RM 17,000 (already transferred out to Myanmar)

2 x RM 200

1 x RM 300

2 x RM 100

1 x RM 50

Children –

1 x RM 100

1 x RM 150

1 x RM 200

Foreign  –

1 x AUD 100

1 x AUD 50

1 x BND 100

1 x USD 20

TOTAL = RM 29,410 + Foreign Funds

As I said I will bring RM 50,000 for the kids, if I do not achieve this target from you guys, I will find a way to make the difference. Having said that, there is still the Kid’s Bazaar to go so let’s see how much they can raise from that.

Thank you so much, my dearest readers. We are all in this together. Please join me, walk with me, to see a dream realised. Out of all the funds above that I have received, RM 17,550 were from childhood friends, less than RM2,000 from current personal friends and the rest from blog readers.

I thank you, humbly.

It must be said that I truly respect those who make the effort to offer RM10 or RM50 to this cause because I know people who can offer RM10,000-RM100,000 with their eyes closed, yet don’t. I understand that everyone has their own budget plan for charity, I myself do; yet won’t deny that I am hurt by my own friends who cannot even give me that RM10 – it is one meal, maybe, and if you can afford a Ferrarri, surely you can forego RM10, just this once. RM10 – that is all that I ask of you. I know personally, people who cannot even afford that RM10 and that is understandable but once you are in the income bracket of more than RM50,000 per month, I expect at least RM10 from you. Am I wrong in doing so, you think?

If there is one random act of kindness that you would like to offer this month, please give some money to the Children of Myanmar. I am committed to building their lives till they can sustain themselves. Please help me help them.

Just RM10 into my bank account and an email (mamapumpkin at gmail dot com) informing me of your name and contact details.
