The night before Chinese New Year

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

After loading our tummies with the home-cooked CNY meal that my MIL prepared, we were all ready for some horizontal activity, like meditating in the yoga corpse pose. Heh. It was 11.30pm-ish.

The three of us, the Hubs, Tee and myself, dragged ourselves to our bedroom and collapsed onto our mattresses that was calling out to us. It was bliss. A great day, great food, great company………we were in food coma with full bellies.

Then. At exactly 11.35pm, I repeat, pee-am…..

A loud thud followed by rampant door knocking pinched our bodies with fear. Alarmed, the Hubs swung the door open when Ama shouted out something and ran downstairs.

What in the world was going on? I wondered. By then, three heads were up. Vertical.

The camera! The camera! Quickly! Bring the camera!

Camera? Oh God. What is it this time? What could they possibly want to photograph near midnight?

It turns out, they wanted to photograph this plant of theirs, some magic flower plant that only flowers once in a year and only for one night. The sweet smelling magic flower plant is fifteen to twenty feet tall. Can someone please tell me what the name of this plant is? Anyone?

It was dark as hell. Yet, my beloved in-laws rushed out with ladder in tow and started climbing. May I remind you, it is almost midnight, when most of us, especially in ulu town Kota Bharu, are way in bed snoring.

Can you see Kong-Kong below perched on his blue ladder? They were So, SO excited that their plant flowered and they had caught it!!! Man!! So this is what gets people in Kota Bharu out of bed at night. Such a simple event caused such a commotion. I just could NOT see what the big deal was. But I remind myself that this is Kota Bharu and there is absolutely nothing happening here. Except for blooming flowers and a brand new TESCO (we’ll leave that for another day, shall we?)

As for me, it would take a thunderstorm of Godiva to get me going. Yeah…..Godiva milk chocolates raining down to get me excited out of bed at 11.30pm. PEE-AM!!!

  1. I’m not sure if this is it, but I think its called the Epiphyllum or more commonly known as the ‘night blooming cereus/orchid’. They used it in Britney Spear’s Midnight fantasy perfume.. hehe

  2. ooooo….nice. i remember seeing something like this in Dennis the Menace movie. wait…maybe they made it up, but Mr. Wilson did say it only blooms once a lifetime and for 1 night 😉

  3. i can picture your in-laws going “tsk, tsk, tsk”, wagging their fingers at you as they shake their heads and go, “haiyo, how ignorant are you to not know how to marvel at this…”
p/s:actually, i’m on your side, hahaha! what’s the big deal anyway?
