My First Official Run – ParkCity Run at Desa Park City

It’s official – 28th November 2011 SUNDAY.

A few months ago, my coach INSISTED I signed up for the Desapark City run after chickening out on this years StanChart Run. I can’t remember now why I hadn’t gone for the Stanchart Run but I’m sure I had a reason. I can’t promise it was a very good reason but certainly I have reasons for everything.

So I paid the money and got registered for the ParkCity Run.

A week ago, he buzzed me to say we had to go pick up our running kit.

*%@$#*

What the heck is a running kit? I’d already forgotten about the run!

So by my ears, he pulls me all the way to the International School at ParkCity (who are the organisers of the run) to collect our running kit on the Friday morning with British Nanny in tow. I now have a British Nanny after going through several rounds of frustrations with Filipino and Indonesian maids, we now have an Indonesian to clean and a British Nanny to mind T2. She has been nothing short of GREAT.

Because I am a busy work from home Mom, of course I was the only race participant who didn’t print out the race form details in order to collect my running kit but thanks to the organisers’ flexibility and my Blackberry, I was able to retrieve said information for barter.

T2 was the only child in the whole process of running kit pick up. She was so bored. And look, GREEN running vests! EWE. Green’s one of my favourite colours but not THIS green! T1 said she loved it and asked if she could have it after my run. I wish people would design nice running gear for future runs. One must look stylish even when running……

But hey look, we got goodie bags! British Nanny and T2 were excited about the goodie bags and so was I! In it were a free can of Gatorade, some mozzie guard, the running timer chip thing and you know what? My memory is so crap that I cannot remember what else was in the bag.

I asked T2 if she was going to join me on the run and this was her response…..

What do you reckon? Is that a yes?

So the plan was for Coach to pick me up at 4am and go for the run but the night before the run (and I’d missed a great Brazilian Party just so I would get enough sleep for the run), Coach raised the white flag and said he couldn’t go with all sorts of lame excuses but that I HAD to go.

It was a complete set up. I was almost happy that he’d bailed out on me and was ready to bail out myself.

But the Hubs said he’d take me. Together with the sleeping kids. My sleeping kids. At 6am in the morning.

A niggling irritating voice kept whispering that I had to do it.

I DIDN’T WANT TO DO IT.

I set my alarm clock nevertheless and told myself to go with how I felt when it rang.

The Hubs and I watched Trespass with Nicole Kidman and Nick Cage before bed after the kids went down which reminded me how lucky we were NOT to be rich and wealthy with a lot of material goods because look what happens. I think my head must have gone down about 1am before……..

*CCCccccrrrRRRRREEEEEeeeeeeeNNNNNnnnNNNGGGGGGgggggggGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!*

And the wind was actually full of positive air in my bedroom! I bounced out and squeezed into my lime green running vest and told myself that I was going to finish today’s race. I knew I had a few people who wanted to see me do that, namely the Hubs, my girls, my Coach and Brigitte Rozario.

Just imagine, first time amateur attempting to finish a 5km race but wearing top notch Nike running gear with Nike pouch to carry phone and inhaler and ipod for motivation. If you’re a runner, you’re a runner. You don’t need fancy gear. I was obviously NOT a runner……

And after the first 3 minutes, I asked myself what I was doing there. Everyone else looked like professional runners. Everyone was so slim!!!

That was when I told myself that I would continue running till I became that slim.

Hoo-Hoo-Hoo…….I know we’re ALL laughing………..

So here’s the evidence of me doing the race.

Halfway through the run, I had some little cheerleaders cheering me on which just compelled me to make a gratitude stop. Who the frig cared about what time I did at the finish line? A quick kiss and I was off again……

At the end of it, I expected to finish at 50 minutes but came out at 46.41 minutes.

Not bad at all. *pats myself on the back*

Even got a medal for it. (image below on white-out because my face was completely FLUSHED and really, it looked like a dead lobster, so really for your comfort……)

But look what my little minx said?

“But Mama! You weren’t even first! How come you got a medal???”

The race was not that well organised because in the dark in the wee hours of the morning, there were not enough directions and people did not know where to go, what to do etc. But an experience nonetheless……that ended with a pleasant breakfast with my little monsters. T1 even bumped into a friend whilst at breakfast and followed her home to play. And the Hubs and I bumped into another friend who’d just had a baby! Everyone’s living out in DesaPark these days, huh?

EVERYONE was happy this Sunday.
