The ony reason I attempted to read this book (lent to me by my dearest Italian friend in London whom I dearly miss) was because my Mom has cancer and this book was about a little 7 year old girl who loses her mom to cancer. I guess I wanted to learn what it would be like should I lose my Mother one day to cancer *God forbid*.

The story is about a 1960s family set in Bristol, England and narrates the minds of two sensitive relationships back and forth, mother and daughter, about how they feel daily about the world, their day to day lives and of each other.

I would kill to read my mother’s diary for this but I don’t think she has one. It really shows just how far we are sometimes from the truth. Just because someone does or says something, doesn’t mean whatever you perceive in your mind. I’ve always known that but this book refreshed that fact, because as people, we’re just engineered to show what we want to show. I’m not so good at this because I am more transparent. If I don’t like you, you’ll know.

The book took me a long time to finish as evidently, it has been in my handbag for the longest time (I was going to link this but couldn’t find those posts!!! Do you remember the 2 times I posted about my handbag contents??? Then I remembered that Pek Imm made a comment about chucking the book so I did a search and voila! Thank you Pek Imm!). I’m glad I finally got to finish it this last trip to Chiangmai. It was the 6 hour plane ride (to and fro) and I had tons of babysitters on board. Thank you to my aunt who entertained Tee all the way back with hand cream as baby bear shampoo, tissues as diapers and rolls of paper as baby bear food.

To be honest, the book was boring, hence it took me that long (almost 6 months, ahaha!). But it was interesting to learn insight into cancer patients as it confirmed how moody they were – like a light switch, one day off, one day on. They cannot help it, they are suffering. And the author did well in switching voices really well in her book, not an easy thing to do. Would I recommend it? I think it’s worth a flip if you had a mom with cancer or if you were a mom with cancer.

Despite the boring read, I still cried on the plane when it came to the last page. SO SAD!!!! Poor 7 year old girl!!!

Eat healthy, my friends, and exercise…….because you only live once. And at very least, you owe it to your loved ones.
