Back in the day, I was very competitive. I wanted to win at everything and the want was so strong that I did win at everything. Even arm-wrestling the boys at 16!!! Now that I have my own kids, I try to play down the winning concept. However, I think it is inborn as T1 and T2 are both very competitive! T1 is very self-driven and works hard at winning but thankfully, when she loses (after much training), she is a gracious loser.

As an example, she lost one day and I was worried she was going to throw a fit or show poor sportsmanship but she kept very calm. Later, she emerged as the overall winner amongst every kid. Phew. I asked her later how she felt when she lost and what went through her mind? She said she wasn’t worried at all, she knew she was going to win. She was going to MAKE herself win. Wow. Cockiness in a little body? So I told her that EVEN if she had lost or always loses, it is fine by me as long as she tried her best, gave it her best shot. Even if she never won the race, or got 100% for Math, as long as she knew that she’d tried her best, it was completely OK. Really, really, really. It is the journey that makes all things worthwhile.

So no matter how many trophies and awards you get in your life, no matter how much money you make or educated you get (Harvard, MIT, Cambridge), it doesn’t mean jack if you don’t have a good heart and a spirited soul. Good values and good manners, learning to be responsible and considerate, learning to give and share, take turns and be humble; you’ll get a hell of a lot more trophies and awards from me for that!
