Being a maid

My husband cannot believe how much money a maid can make these days. Ever since I hired our new PART-TIME Filipino helper, he has been on my case because he thought she was overpaid. He’d complain that his shirts weren’t ironed well enough. Then he’d complained that she’d scratched his Karcher hoover, mighty pissed about that! And various petty moans akin to an old, grumpy man.

We paid her RM2,100 for 1 month of work. She starts work at 930am to 230pm, Mondays to Fridays. She gets public holidays off and weekends off. We even gave her paid annual leave and paid medical leave. Yet, it wasn’t enough for her. Mind you, she’s a freshie, only 23 years old and new in town. Yet, she didn’t even have the patience to prove her worth. I already told her she would get a RM100 monthly bonus for hard work every month in addition to her salary.

Whilst she worked with us, I also gave her a whole load of Evita Peroni clips because we are in the process of de-clutter, remember? There was more than RM3,000 worth of clips and hair accessories right there. She needed a bag to carry them home. I also gave her shoes, clothes, blankets, duvets (those that we’d gotten for the Japan tsunami and never sent).

So yeah. My husband was livid. He says that fresh GRADUATES get the same salary after spending years abroad working for that University degree.

It’s official.

I’m an over-compassionate big time SUCKER.

I thought that by over-compensating, one would be so grateful and want to work harder.

Well, for the record, this strategy does not work with maids!!!!!

She took on another job with an expatriate. They can probably afford to pay more, but more importantly to her, they had a driver who could send her home to her doorstep. Mind you, I’d send her to the LRT station after her work when I did the school run to go pick T1 up, it was just too impractical for me to pick her up in the mornings when I’d be rushing T2’s breakfast and work at the same time.

Thus I’ve decided. No more Filipino maids for me. The end.

My next one will be an Indonesian. They are more humble.

Believe it or not, I treat my maids very, very well. I talk to them politely and give them a lot of leeway, to the point that I become their maid instead! They also eat everything we eat, including the salmon and the Tim-Tams.

*big sigh*

No more Filipino maids. This past one came to work with make up, dangling earrings and trendy shoes. I should have known better.

The Hubs, is of course, pleased that we are maid-less again. He says that maids have such a good life, we should go out and be maids!

  1. Wow… She is so well paid then kindy and even Montessori teachers. I want be your maid lah

  2. I know what you mean, dear. Hubby just went back (sob, sob) and told me that the maid who is supposed to come in ONCE a week when we are away to clean up the place left our clothes drying in the balcony to collect dust for nearly 2 weeks :S

And I even told her, “Umm…come in when you’re free, ok?” How dumb is that, right?

I’m just counting down to the day the lil girl can join the nursery so I can re-claim my kitchen and revert back to a cheaper cleaner.

  3. first, bless your kind compassionate heart.
second, I thought you’ve learnt your lesson with the last live-in maid???
third, aiyah… if I don’t have to care for my kids and chauffeur them around, I’d work for you.. like seriously, I would!!

  4. OMG, I’m totally speechless when I read how blessed was your maid to work for you … YET she didn’t appreciate it at all..Tsk tsk tsk..Poor you!

  5. I tried the part time Filipino maid option too when I was waiting for my live in maid. It cost me close to RM100 each time for 6 hours of work, and it was quite shoddily done – and the one I used came with glowing recommendations from expats (obviously, I have vastly different expectations)!!! In the end, we decided that it was better to just get the professional cleaners in on the weekends only. Less stress and less expensive! However, having said that, we now have a live in Filipino maid and my stress levels have gone up again! It is a MYTH that Filipino helpers are better workers than Indonesians, and that they are good with children! This current maid’s hygeine levels are appalling, and my daughter runs riot with her around! Can’t wait for the 2 years to be over!!!!! *sighz*

  6. for god’s sake.. why did you give her your Evita. Paying in kind and expecting kindness don’t work with maids. I think with your patience, you can even train a Cambodian for a fraction of the price and they are more appreciative.

  7. hahaha.. laughing at your hub’s sentence.. we should go out there become maid.. But frankly speaking… 2k for a part time maid??

    OMG…

  8. Erk! I earned less than that in my very first job and I had to work long hours! Guess I should part-time as a maid instead back then? =P

  9. Wow, looks like e’one here said the same thing… We don’t mind to b ur maid. And she has higher pay than I am when I started work. A grad!

  10. obviously she didn’t know how lucky she was …. hopefully she gets the same treatment from the new e/yer otherwise, padan muka!! bless you too with the next maid ya!!
