Intelligence versus hard work

Do you think children who are naturally intelligent score well in exams or is it the hard working ones who do? Or is it a mix of both? If you aren’t so intelligent, you work harder and if you’re super intelligent, you work less hard? Is it fair then if a child is not so intelligent and then has to work extra hard just to gain the same result? I believe every child is born with some form of intelligence and this can either be nurtured or killed. More often than not, by their own parent. Statistics have shown that when a child is happy (this doesn’t mean the child gets his way all the time but that he does get a healthy dose of positive attention, is allowed to have fun and is guided in the right direction), the brain naturally moves towards the right direction too. And then if a child is stressed a lot, the brain moves backwards.

I always praise hard work whenever T1 comes home with a 100% score and not praise her for being clever because I want her to know that she HAS to work hard for everything in life. I figured that later, she’d discover by herself what working smart is all about, if she hasn’t already. It is a good habit to start early, working hard, or you’d have a child who turns out like many useless rich kids we see on the streets who have never made a bed in their lives nor know how to chop onions! Worse, they have a sense of entitlement!!! They are entitled to get a free car from their parents, a handphone, a nice school bag, branded colour pencils…..oh, you name it. Once your child goes down the wrong path, you can almost say goodbye once they hit circa 10 years of age.

At T1’s school, there are many kids who come from fortunate backgrounds (or less fortunate, depending on how you look at it) and although many children are left to their own devices because parents are too busy to pay them any attention, there are also those whose parents pay them too much attention. The wrong kind! It is sad and I feel sorry for both. There is a graduation ceremony at the end of the academic school year where top students receive a gift for graduation and I cannot help feeling how the others who don’t make it feel? If ever, T1 was last in class, let’s say; I would wish for her to feel exactly how the winner feels because getting straight A’s and being the top student of the year means jack shit. I would want her to have that inner confidence to know that everybody is different. And that everybody has different talents and weaknesses.

Next January, T1 will be practising Year 4 (International School) work at school just 3 months after her 7th birthday. I have received looks and comments as though I am the local Amy Chua, screw driving her to propel into the world of academics. This couldn’t be further from the truth. But people can say what they like. As long as T1 is happy, who cares?! The school has recommended for her to do this and she wants to do it (although what does she know), and we, as her parents support her 500%.
