Recently, I have been looking at Nanny options in Kuala Lumpur because I might possibly go back to employment. DREAM!!!! I know we have sworn never to have another helper in this house after our bad experience with maids in the past, but if I were to go back to work, I definitely need some kind of help. So, to start off with, I have agreed to work half days four days a week and will need to employ a live-out nanny for that exact amount of time, or maybe she could come at 9am and go home at 5pm kind of arrangement.
These are my options. What do you think I should do? A point to note is that I will not be leaving the baby alone with the nanny at any such time, unless by some amazing miracle, the nanny is able to gain my trust.
Filipino Nanny
RM1200 for half day, RM2000 for full day (9am-5pm)
Pros:
1. educated and recommended by friends helpers. The girl has her entire family in KL and we are welcome to visit her family home.
2. T2 liked her at first meet so I know this is an arrangement that can work. I worked 5 hours straight whilst the Nanny took care of T2’s breakfast, lunch and entertainment. T2 didn’t look for me at all. I LIKE this arrangement. But T2 after 5 hours needed Mama to put her to bed.
3. because she is educated, she reads English very well; this really helps in reading to T2 or reading recipes etc
4. my gut feel that she is trustworthy……but I thought my last one was trustworthy too. Crap.
Cons:
1. No contract and could possibly let me down by suddenly deciding not to show up although she comes highly recommended by people who’ve had her friends/family work for them for years.

Chinese Amah ala ‘confinement lady types’
RM2000 – 2800 (for more experienced) full day (9am-6pm)
Pros:
1. good COOKS!!! YUM!!!! YUM!!! YUM!!!! My kids will eat boiled soup every day and be healthy and strong!
2. errr……has some knowledge on Chinese medicine?
3. will probably have her own car and know her way around KL, which could be useful
Cons:
1. could get controlling like confinement ladies and won’t listen

Indonesian/Cambodian Helpers
RM1000 (half day), RM1500 (full day)
Pros:
1. cheapest
2. easiest to manage, they are generally less demanding
Cons:
1. language barrier
2. the Hubs says their lack of brain power could drive me nuts though I think it is the luck of the draw
3. they may get their syndicate friends to rob your home! It has happened!

I haven’t actually met up with any Chinese Amahs or Indonesian/Cambodian candidates yet so unfair to compare apple to apple. I guess that will be my project for next week – to meet up with these candidates to give the Filipino lady some competition, or not.

well, reading again all the above, if you ask me, no.2 would be my absolute choice. trusted on everything except help on study. but then u can also consider putting the kids over at after school care center (if there is any near to your working place?)
I would never leave my kids alone with maid. so option 1 is out.
no 2 still can consider, but I doubt you can live with it as they really don’t take advise..they tend to do thing their way.
What about day carE? those kindie, they have after school day care. Some really have very good day care teacher…
At the end of the day, despite the 2 million hours in researching you have done, it all boils down to your luck.
Hope you found the right one by now. Which one did you choose btw? I would opt for 2 though I feel like firing my current one. Only if I can fire my own MIL *sigh* I don’t mind if it’s experienced but, but.. sigh. Anyways, RM2k is very high price for chinese amah. You sure this is the market rate?

I’m going to be a father soon. Both me & my wife are working. We never want to leave our baby to a stranger, nursery or anything. My mother in law can help to look after the baby, but will need some help as she is also taking care of another grandchildren. Therefore if i can find a stay out maid that work 8-5 to help my mother in law, that will be perfect!
