Renewing passport in Malaysia

The Hubs suddenly highlighted to me last night that my Malaysian passport expires in July 2011. As far as we know, one cannot travel 6 months towards the passport expiry date. Why this is so, I am not sure. Shouldn’t you be able to travel to the very end since you’ve PAID for it? Renewing passport in Malaysia is still a mystery to me…..

Anyway, SHOCK. HORROR. I have a Bangkok trip coming up. MY Bangkok trip of liberation. MY Bangkok trip sans anyone shorter than me – NO KIDS!!! MY Bangkok Birthday!!! NooooOOOOOOO!!!! Don’t do this to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then the Hubs remembered how I have been having trouble of late with my lack of Identity since my MYKAD got stolen by the zoo months ago. I cannot open bank accounts. I cannot open companies. I cannot register for anything official basically. And I’ve been needing to do all things official of late.

BIGGER SHOCK. BIGGER HORROR!!

No MYKAD means no passport renewal?

We hurriedly checked the immigration website that confirmed that if you didn’t have your MYKAD, you could still renew your passport with your temporary IC and your birth certificate.

Phew.

I guessed my renewing passport in Malaysia was happening after all.

This morning, I was all ready and planning to brave yet another Government agency trip alone with my baby. Oh, I keep calling her a baby but really, she is toddling around. Which is even worse, because when my number calls out at the immigration department, I’d be 500 meters at the other end of the hall as T2’s bodyguard and would have to pick up a screaming toddler and rush to said counter praying I won’t trip over someone elses shoe in the process. Why don’t they have special lanes for parents with kids again? I was there a few months ago and they didn’t.

But just to be safe, as I always am, I called them first; also to prevent myself from ending up in prison (because if I’d made myself with T2 to the immigration only to find out we’d have to go back due to me not having a MYKAD, I’d have murdered someone). EVEN THOUGH THE WEBSITE SAID I COULD USE MY TEMPORARY IC.

I called the Damansara branch. No reply. I called the headquarters in Putrajaya and explained my predicament of not having my MYKAD ready yet, and the lady said I absolutely NEEDED my original MYKAD now. The temp ID won’t cut it. I explicated that it wasn’t my fault that bloody JPN didn’t believe that I wasn’t a Malaysian citizen!!! She told me to go to JPN to sort it out with them. Tell them I’m travelling real soon. But JPN told me it’ll take at least 6 months! All because they couldn’t identify my thumb print and because I was born in another country.

So tomorrow, T2 and I, we shall brave the JPN department and should they not promise to give me my new MYKAD a week before my travel dates, I will blow their house down!

So when and if (pray for me) my renewing passport in Malaysia does eventualise, can I do it with that kiosk thingie? Does it open at night? I’m just going to have that thumb print problem again, aren’t I?

*walks away huffing and puffing*

  1. Ok calm down and it’s time to pull some strings, sista!!!! As far as I know, the passport kiosk opens from 8am to 6pm, or something. Definitely no 7-11 hours for you. At least passports are ready within the same day, not like the 3 months you had to wait about 10 years ago. Good luck and let us know!!!!
P/S: Touch wood, if it still doesn’t work out, we’ll go somewhere local ok?

  2. I managed to renew my passport at Damansara with temporary IC but it was done at the counter (manual). Of course, the wait is much longer as compared to the kiosk. I think for kiosk you definitely need the your proper IC card.

  3. Ayo. Ini macam, manyak susah woh. Temp IC ok if u were born in Msia. Not so good if you were not.

Maaaaanyak susah. I wish you all the gooooood luck! And if it doesn’t work out, I shall mentally spit on the officer that served u. PTOOI!

  4. Saying a prayer for you that all will go smoothly tomorrow. I am also doing the same for my youngest girl tomorrow but, a little less stressful here, since I just pop into the post office to submit the app and wait up to 10 days for it to arrive in the mailbox. Enjoy the girlie weekend away.

  5. I used the kiosk at Pusat Bandar Damansara last month – non school hols period. You will need an envelope for your old passport, photocopy of your MyKad (Front and Back), 1 passport photo. They have a small basket with a supply of envelopes – which you must not seal(!). I went there the day before to check the place out (I work nearby) and got my envelope then. Thank goodness as they had run out when I returned the next morning. Not sure what would happen if you use some other envelope. There is a chap on duty at the kiosk most of the time so he might know.

Bring cash too – I think it was RM300. Your original MyKad is “read” by the machine and so is your old/expiring passport. BTW they will add on up to 6 months max to the 5 years duration of the new passport but not anymore than that.

The receipt will give you the time to pick up your passport (1 hour from submission, in my case). I went about 15 minutes later – to be on the safe side and got my passport after a further 15 minute wait.

Be warned, there was a problem with one of the renewal machines that day which resulted in 7-8 unlucky folk having to return the next day for collection. Apparently their passport renewal envelopes were “stuck in the machine”. Hope they have sorted it out otherwise it’s a bit russian roulette.

    Good luck!
