Family

Tee’s birthday party happens this weekend. Just a small family and close friends only do. We reserved our guest bedroom for my in-laws who said they were coming earlier. Today I called them and MIL said FIL had a painful ankle and needed to travel to Singapore to get it checked. No mention about not coming to Tee’s party despite me bringing up the planning of her party several times. Finally I asked, “So I guess you’re not coming down for Tee’s birthday then?”

“No, how can we?” MIL replied curtly and changed the subject to her lovely, faultless son in Singapore.

Am I jealous? No. Hurt? Yes.

Only because ever since I met the Hubs, it has been apparent to ME that my MIL only has eyes for the Hub’s elder brother. She praises him all the time. And they make more trips to visit Singapore than they do KL. Perhaps they don’t like the air in KL. But BIL took a year out last year to further his studies with his wife in Australia. They went there too to visit. Not to mention, BIL is as rude and condescending to his own mother as a prison warden to his convicts. Yet, she only has eyes for him. I wonder why that is.

It was the Hubs who sacrificed his life in New York to come home to be here for the ailing and aged parents. It is the Hubs who always gets called whenever there is a crisis in the family. We have given them a grandchild. Oh…too bad she wasn’t a boy, so I guess that doesn’t count. BIL doesn’t have children and probably never will. The last time we saw him, he asked his own mother to buy him a Mercedes Benz. The boy is 41 years old. I won’t be surprised either if he made his mother pay for his further education in Australia. They have no contact with us whatsoever. They’re not the least bit interested that they have a living niece who is the cutest, most precious thing around. They don’t even attempt to say, “Hi How are you?” when we meet for family celebrations over the Chinese New Year. I am sure it is not us with a problem but it sure is strange being in the same room as some weirdos from Singapore.

One thing is for sure. I will never bring up Tee to be like any of them.

I guess we can’t choose family………but we can certainly make a new ‘almost perfect’ family.
