Secret Temple of Yap Ah Loy

We were invited as guests of honour (actually, we were the ones honoured to be invited!) to the annual dinner of Yap Ah Loy’s temple one evening and it was an interesting learning experience. We learned that somewhere in Petaling Street, hidden away in a courtyard, stood his secret temple. Built in 1864 with a history so rich that the expectedly boring dinner turned out unexpectedly to be an educational enrichment encounter *smiles*

To be really honest, I was really enthralled with the story of what happened to Yap Ah Loy’s temple and how the family mismanaged it to present day where a committee now manages it. And because I didn’t blog about this the day after we attended the dinner when the stories were all still fresh in my head, I have now forgotten all the very interesting details!!! CRAP!!!

The temple is the oldest Taoist temple in Kuala Lumpur (I googled that) and is built obscurely hidden away in the shop lots due to feng shui reasons. I know I must take T1 there one day.

Anyway, below are the trustees who now take care of the temples funds. As you can see, one of them is very old. He must have taken over when that saga happened. The saga where one of the family members gambled away the funds of the temple. Something like that….

It was a karaoke dinner which was a completely new experience for T1 and there was someone famous singing. The lady below is the daughter of one of the famous roads in Kuala Lumpur. It is a road off Jalan Sungei Besi with super duper food. Take a guess?

So whilst googling trying to find out what this person was famous for, I found some old photos of KL instead. Fascinating stuff. Why is it I cannot find out the history of our road names?? When I google my grand-uncle’s road name, Mamapumpkin comes in as NUMBER ONE on Googles search page. WTF? And nowhere is there any history or information on what or who he was. Perhaps someone needs to write a book or draw up a site on how all our roads are named and who the hell all these people are. The more common ones are like Jalan Tun HS Lee, that comes at the top of my head. He was a founder of MCA etc etc etc.

I really wouldn’t have the balls to go up on stage like that to sing karaoke……not unless very, very drunk.

.

The menu was pretty good as was the food. T1 was fascinated with the sharks fin soup – so many questions?! I just told her they weren’t real anymore….

.

HUGE chow tai chong (silver pomfret)…..very expensive!!!

.

There was obviously a reason for the red arrow below but because this post is so outdated, I can no longer remember what it was for! Kleenex wet wipes? Who knows!

Which reminds me, I am one whole year behind in updating this blog and in 2-3 weeks, we fly to Kota Bharu again and I haven’t even posted our pictures from our last years Kota Bharu trip. Yikes. They have all been uploaded and edited. I just haven’t had the time to organise and waffle. Bah.

I truly wonder how I will be managing this year with so much on my plate. I CAN DO IT! *so I try brainwashing myself*
