How to play a fun chain story game with children
By bigpumpkin | August 24, 2008
If you’d like to learn more fun games for children, or rather, more fun games to play with preschoolers, hop on to my other blog.
Today at dinner, we taught Tee how to play ‘create a story chain’ game. For those who suffered a deprived childhood, a story chain game is where one person starts a story that is then continued by the next person and the next and the next. This is what transpired this evening, from what I can recall from my lack of memory cells:
Story 1
Mommy: Once upon a time, there was a brown cow.
Tee: The brown cow climbed up the hill and fell asleep.
Aunty: There, he met a horse.
Uncle: And the horse said, “Get off my hill, I don’t like you.”
Daddy: So the cow said, “This is not YOUR hill. It’s anyone’s hill and we have to share!”
Mommy: The horse ran down the hill…..(my idea here was that the horse was going to call his other horse friends to come to the hill to carry the cow off, or threaten him to leave or something *smile*)
Tee: And he ran and ran till he got home and shut the door tight so that nobody could come in. The end.
At which point we laughed because Tee was making the horse imitate her own tantrums. It was interesting that she made the horse ‘merajuk’(sulk) in his own home rather than solve the problem in another manner. I’ll need to have a chat with her about that!
Story 2
Tee: Once upon a time, there was a turkey. The turkey and the bumble bee were playing and playing and playing in the bumble bee’s house.
Aunty: Then the turkey said, “I’m really here to buy some honey.”
Uncle: And the bumble bee stung the turkey!!! The turkey went “OUCH!!! Why did you do that???!!!!” (aiyo, this uncle….always so hostile!)
Daddy: And the bumble bee said, “Well, it’s really alright to get a sting the day before Thanksgiving….” (and we all burst into hysterics again)
Mommy: *pause* (brain not working) *pause* And then, and then…..the turkey fainted. (then Tee asks in a whisper, “What’s Thanksgiving, Mommy?”and I replied that it was a celebration to give thanks for everything and they usually eat turkey on that day)
Tee: THE END!! (we burst into hysterics again unsure if she took the easy way out unable to continue the story or if she really meant the end for the turkey!)
Try it, my dear readers. It’s fun!

Haha, that’s really fun!!! I used to play this with my brothers while we were supposed to sleep at night … and normally if you hear no continuation from one of us, which means we were asleep …
