38 hours of traveling with a toddler

    To watch this.

We left our home in KL at exactly 6pm on 27th May 2008. Tee had had a short nap during the day hence was wide awake during the flight, despite the Doctor advising us to not let her nap so she could pass out on the plane. The day before we left, we started her on some antibiotics as she was running a higher fever than the last few days. Must’ve been all that pre-holiday anxiety.

For the entire 38 hour journey, she only slept 9 hours, and this was towards the last leg of the journey where she finally passed out for 6 hours straight. Earlier naps comprised power naps of half hour spurts. After hour 20, the Hubs and I had already started feeling it and we had another 18 hours to go. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Actually, we didn’t have a bloody choice!! The only way I’d do this again is if we flew by Concorde jet. Maybe flying First Class would help :-) but these tickets already cost RM24,000 so what would First Class have cost???

My girl was amazingly good throughout the journey. She never cried or fussed, and if there ever was a problem, it was because she talked too much. This was most apparent when JAL was delayed for two hours AFTER everyone had boarded in Narita Airport and most passengers on the plane were asleep, or trying to sleep. Yet, Tee was wide awake with strong mouth muscles and booming lungs to match. It was only this time that the Hubs and I wanted to stuff her into the luggage compartment above from pure embarrassment. You know, when everyone is asleep, her voice seems louder and clearer…….Making noise whilst everyone was asleep was one thing, but saying things not for public consumption sent shivers up our spine.

Like, “Mommy, do you have a smelly bum?” (she just thinks this is funny!) or  “How did that man lose all his hair? His head is so smooth now…” *faint* “When is the plane going to leave? Are we going to have a plane crash?!”

Despite not sleeping, she also didn’t eat very well. But she was ill, so maybe that’s why. Our last 10-15 hours were really rough because by then, the Hubs and I were really, really tired. But when we finally arrived at the Hotel, we showered and hit those clean sheets immediately for the next……fuck, only 4 hours before Tee woke up all bright eyed (since she had slept a whole 6 hours) and wanted breakfast. Lovely…….

This past week, we’ve been surviving on 3-5 hours sleep every single day. We, as in the Hubs and I, minus Tee, because she gets to pass out anytime she likes.

But it’s been all worth it.

Because we got to witness this first hand. And it was such a big thrill and an honour for us that one of the astronauts that got launched was a friend.

      Hey Patsy!

Woww.. that launch must’ve been really amazing! My husband is planning a vacation for our 5th anny this year and I’m not sure I could stand that long in a flight with my dramatic lil one or not.. Hmmm..

But hey, glad to know that Tee made it through.. gives me a lil bit of hope! LOL!
