    The final countdown

    By bigpumpkin | April 7, 2008

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The Hubs, who has been Tee’s sole carer for the last 4.5 days, has begged me today for a one and a half hour early release from his duties, which was originally scheduled for midnight tonight. He had missed his Formula One yesterday because he was in charge of taking Tee to a party and is dying to watch the repeats tonight. Hmm…….*taps fingers*

What did I do in the last 4.5 days of absolute bliss? What? No whiny kid when you have a migraine? No demands made when you’re already late busy trying to pack the school bag? No calling out, “Mommy!!!!” when you have your hands stinking and wet from cleaning fish? Not having to lift a finger to cook, clean or penetrate a safe distance from a toddler? Ladies and gentlemen, it really was pure bliss. I had forgotten what it was like to have real silence. To be able to hear the birds chirp outside my lanai, to be able to bask in my own solitude, to be able to place my large ass wherever it needed to go, for as long………… as it wanted to.

I read, I played games, I designed my dream home (and it’s amazing how much you can achieve when you’re really focused! I thought this would take me two years but in a few days, I’ve already pinned the layouts down to a Tee.), I slept, I watched movies, documentaries, I listened to music, I shopped, I browsed, I ate in peace…………….

But tonight, I have to pinch myself to wake myself up from this dream because the Hubs goes back to work tomorrow. And me too. Boo Hoo! I am wishing it was a longer break but he is itching to see his office for the first time. I guess he’ll start appreciating his colleagues more now and beg his Boss for overtime. To earn more money, of course.

He snored from sheer tiredness every single night these last 4 nights and I have not heard him snore since I don’t know when. He even explained to me how difficult it was to carry a sleeping baby, a bag, two drinks, another bag, a stroller, a set of keys and then still have to manouver the keys into the doors…………uhuh………..we mothers can slap that task with our eyes closed like an octopus. Then, he complained he had a headache from childish screams during a playgroup when one Mom cleverly announced, “Welcome to OUR world.” Us Moms, we have this childcare thing sorted with the back of our hands. Men on the other hand, need practice.

So now that the Hubs has had a slight taste of Tee-dom (even though he still hasn’t had her full-on, because there were moments when I was present and she would still come to me to ask for stuff), he has said that it was great taking care of her. My answer to him was, “I agree. It’s really great in the first year of taking care of her. Try it for three years?”

Having said all that, I think he has done a wonderfully superb job because despite being sick and feeling rough, he completed his job. He didn’t moan once, he didn’t give up on me and I had absolutely no complaints from Tee. He even fed her well with his own home cooked meals, bathed her clean and brought her to school and everywhere else with more efficiency than I could have mustered myself.  For this, he deserves this medal of honour for being the best Daddy of all time.

    Well done, Daddy.

He deserves a pat on the back. Well, both of you better enjoy the 1-child days..once you have #2..there is no “your turn to take care of the kid” days.

Life without kids? What is that like? My mind does not comprehend nor remember such a life. Hahaha. Congrats mamapumpkin on a chance to live in the past. Kudos daddypumpkin for surviving.
