Tee’s first Church experience - ONE WHOLE HOUR

    By bigpumpkin | March 31, 2008

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Because the Hubs was out of town and we were alone on an early Sunday morning, I decided to take her to Church at the spur of the moment. I myself, have not been to Church for eons and since the Hubs has no interest whatsoever in dealings with God, he never wants to take us. It was the perfect opportunity. After an hour of prayer that Tee would survive the Church trip and behave, we dared it, just the two of us, hand-in-hand to Church.

We got all dressed up into our Sunday best (when do we ever get to dress up?!) and headed off to St John’s Cathedral although from the amount of kilometres we clocked up, we could have ended up in Kota Bharu. The KL Marathon was happening concurrently and many roads had been closed from out of where we lived. Grrr…….and for someoe who didn’t read the newspapers, it was purely trial and error and driving blindly that finally found us at St John’s, incidentally the same time DBKL were threatening illegal roadside retailers at the Church. Hmm….I wonder if they do this at the mosques……I see many roadside hawkers outside mosques, especially during the fasting month. Do they all have licenses?

I digress. Since it was a new thing, Tee was very excited and asked many questions about God, which I made up along the way. Hey, it’s been ages since I went to Sunday School, okay?! At 45 minutes, she finally got restless and kept asking when this was going to end. But I was really proud that she managed to sit through the whole service without hassle. At one point, she drew quietly on paper, then asked questions about the surroundings, complained about the Priest’s smelly incense, then stared at people as though they were retarded. She also took her socks and shoes off midway and started climbing the pews and moving around me. She even tripped and the guy beside me got so worried. I didn’t care less. Itchy bums deserve to learn the hard way.

Finally, mass ended and I badly needed the toilet. So we hunted down a toilet in the adjacent building which wasn’t the prettiest and cleanest of toilets. Tee refused to get into it with me, holding her nose and whinging at the disgust of it. Oh my God, I am SO sending her to a Chinese school with the smelly squatting toilets for this pure display of princess-ness!!!

I had always wanted to get Tee baptised since birth but have just never gotten around to doing it. So today, I finally called the Priest and asked if we could have a private baptism ceremony. He said that we would need to give him a very good reason to have a private ceremony as baptism is a very common ceremony, unlike a funeral.  O_O

I pleaded and asked what kind of good reasons he needed and we discussed it a little. Then he asked where I lived. For a split second, I wondered how relevant it was but answered anyway. Then he said, “Ohhhhh…….okay, you discuss with my office when you’re ready.”

    Huh?

My mother cannot stand priests (hence her conversion into Islam many years ago before she even married a Muslim)because she was molested by some when she was a little girl and when my uncle passed away, the priest where the funeral was going to be held complained to no end about keeping the body at the Church. But when my Mom threw some cash onto his table, he shut up completely.

*sigh* The wonders that money can do is sickening.

what a cute shot of Tee. Do they have Sunday school there? I sent all three monkeys to Sunday school in a Methodist church in PJ, so for 1.5 hour, we have our peace.

Wow! She managed to sit thru the entire service?! I had a tough time sitting thru a Catholic wedding once. In some ways, i’m glad I’m not a Catholic. So, are you really gonna send her to Chinese school?? LOL!

Good job Tee. Sitting through something that you don’t understand what is going on is tough. My kids have 3 hours of church every Sunday. The 1st hour is always tough coz’ they can’t really catch what the speakers are saying. They keep themselves busy with drawing, coloring and books. The 2nd hour is Sunday school - the kids are separated into different classes according to age. 3rd hour is Sharing time - the kids are combined for singing and activities.

I’m going to be straight forward and honest to say that I’m grateful my kids have the gospel teachings to guide their life. Goodness knows they need all the protection they can get in this crazy world. It’s been a great tool in teaching them to choose the right.

You go to St John’s Cathedral, the very old and quaint church at Jln Hang Lekiu? The service ain’t very lively, is it? But actually, I like this kind of setting, makes it feel more like a church than those with hip and loud bands.

Wow….she sat through an hour. That is very good for a 3 year old. As for religion, it is sad that how people uses to take advantage of younger children OR wrongly interprets its true meaning. See sad story below.
