A f#%ing great book - The Kite Runner
By bigpumpkin | August 16, 2007
When I first heard of The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, I turned a blind eye. The title didn’t appeal to me, I mean, what the hell did I care about kites? And the monotone photograph of the back of a boy peeking beside a wall did nothing for me (I’ve subsequently learnt they have a different cover now).
Then I saw the book in my brother’s bedroom. My brother, the copywriter, must know a good book, I thought to myself. And so I borrowed it and told him later. We’re close like that
The book didn’t disappoint. It has been a long time since a book played an entire orchestra on my heart strings. There were several instances where I could not hold back my tears, then there were that of intense relief. Happiness, jealousy, humility, insecurity, arrogance, cruelty, subservience, pride, face, kindness………you name it. This book wasn’t about kites. It is about LIFE!!!
And on top of all the emotions played out that I could totally relate with, it taught me about Afghanistan. Before the Russians and after. It is a humbling experience to learn about another culture through a book. I’d like to do it again soon.
The Kite Runner was not riveting. It was so much more. Everytime I thought I knew what was going to happen, something else happened. Then when I finally thought I knew the ending, more things happened. After being fooled a couple of times, I gave up second guessing and just kept turning the pages. It was really that good.
I do hope though that by telling you this, I don’t spoil the real effects on you, but go get it. It is worth it.
Beautifully written. Awesomely inspiring. Very clever.
Oh, and bonus point….on page 336, he mentions Malaysia. That we use kites to catch fish? Suddenly I am taking this kite thing more seriously. My good friend flies professional kites out at Kota Kemuning. I’m thinking I’m taking Tee over to watch some of this kite flying.
I’m about to start another book but *sigh* how can anything compare right now……
