TAG: 8 Random Facts About The Big Pumpkin - cont’d

    By bigpumpkin | June 30, 2007

    cont’d from here…..

FACT 5 - I used to be a backup dancer for RTM and did 3 advertisements in my lifetime.

When I was 16, I had to work as a back up dancer in order to earn some extra pocket money. My Dad would send me and pick me up from rehearsals, where I got paid RM100-150 per show despite hours and days of practice. I hope they earn more today. I did corporate shows and Hari Raya shows. These days, you’re more likely to see back up dancers in Akademi Fantasia. One time, I was a back up dancer for some local singer (can’t remember who, maybe Seha?) and it was recorded live for Hari Raya. I was in a rush backstage and couldn’t find my black flair pants for the show so I simply put on my black tight pants since they were rushing us out. I got the shelling of my life as soon as we got backstage again because during those days, it was ‘haram’ (illegal?) to wear such ’sexy’ outfits on local TV. No tight pants. Definitely no swimsuits or leotards. And since it was a live telecast, oops…too late. Maybe I caused a revelation? *if only* We’ve come a long way, huh? The 3 advertisements I did includes a Toyota press ad when I was 7, a Marmite TV Commercial when I was 8 and a Kotex (sanitary pads) press ad when I was 16.

FACT 6 - I am truly blessed because my Portuguese Great-Grandmother is watching over me.

That’s what my Mother keeps telling me. And so does the rest of the females in the family. They say I have all the luck in the world with men because I have always had good men. Unlike them. My Mother says that for all the misfortune she has had with men, I only have good fortune with them. I prefer to think that I choose my men wisely and know what I want. Although it is nice that Great Grandma is watching close. My ex-boss who was British and fought in the Falklands War (he shared his war stories a little, gave me a different dimension to life. Just so you know, in the Gulf War, planes were used as attack but in the Falklands War due to landscape conditions, soldiers had to be dropped off and lived in the rough jungles of South America and killed by hand), gave me my first career break when he agreed to pay me a 5 figure salary. After my first 5 months, he commended my performance to my embarrasment, and I told him that it was pure luck. In turn he told me, “You made your luck.” I will always remember that. So people, get out there and reach for the stars! (if that is what you want…..)

FACT 7 - My Roots and Family Tree (search is still ongoing but this is what I know so far)

My great grandfather on my Mother’s side was a famous Doctor from Penang. A heart surgeon buried in Penang with his wife in the same cemetary. They had 5 sons who were all fantastically musically talented and very, very tall (all beyond 6 feet - I definitely missed THIS gene!). One of them was my Grandfather (who married my Chinese Grandmother) who in turn had another 5 sons and 2 daughters, one of which is my Mother. Everyone says how lucky that I have a little girl because in the genes? They’re ALL BOYS. On my Dad’s side, my grandfather was one of the richest men in Teluk Intan (then Teluk Anson) trading oil palm amongst other things. He had 6 wives or mistresses - nobody can verify if they were all legal or not but certainly the step-siblings today have kept in touch somewhat (perhaps in anticipation to claim whatever is left of the estate). Today, nobody is interested in the business to the point that my Dad actually asked my brother if he was interested in running it. He said no. So the business is just there for being there as nobody dares to do anything about it since grandma is still around (she is 95). Honestly, they should just split the shares and call it a day before they become worthless. But they have never cared about the business so why should they now. Grandpa might be wriggling in his grave. My Dad comes from 5 sons. So my dearest brothers, the chances that you will both get baby boys are very, very high.

FACT 8 - I have a phobia of crossing thresholds, swallowing pills and my heart can’t take roller coasters no more

Crossing thresholds. I developed this phobia ever since I ran through a glass door at night time. Now, everytime I cross over a doorway or change in floor pattern, my foot always ALWAYS kicks in first. It’s automatic. Swallowing Pills - I almost died choking on a large pill when I was in Blackpool (the Las Vegas of England). I had turned blue and the ambulance was called. I tried puking, coughing, sipping hot water, back banging, eating bread, eating rice……but nothing worked. I also had to keep calm and not allow my asthma to flare up. Let’s just say, I never want to go through that experience ever again. So now, I hate pills. I only take pills when it is a matter of life and death. And even then, my throat automatically constricts. Roller Coasters? The 2nd last one I did at Genting was enough to make my heart stop. You know, the one that launches you straight up to the sky? Then recently, the space launcher at Hong Kong Disneyland reminded me that I can NOT do this anymore. I know. I’m a real woose.

    So there you go!
